FLY-IN INFORMATION
Use only the active E-W runway 9/27. Other runways will be closed to landing and departing aircraft earlier in the week and reopening Sunday afternoon (check NOTAM for exact times). All landing and departing aircraft: 800’ AGL left-hand pattern. Radio equipped aircraft use UNICOM on 122.9 but be aware that many aircraft are NOT radio equipped. Keep your eyes open…see and avoid and be predictable!
Fly-bys should be conducted south of the active runway 9/27 employing the standard racetrack pattern with a minimum safe altitude. Example: When runway 9 is active, fly-by traffic will practice a right-hand pattern. When runway 27 is active, all fly-bys will employ left-hand racetrack pattern. Please No fly-bys or low flying along closed runways 3/21 or 15/33!
When done flying for the day, or in the case of bad weather, please ensure that your aircraft is tied down. Please provide your own tie-downs.
AIRCRAFT FUEL AVAILABILITY
100LL and ethanol-free auto fuel (MOGAS) is available at Brodhead; cash, check or credit card accepted. Times of operation will be posted at the pumps and in the pavilion. Self-serve fuel is available 24/7 at Monroe Municipal Airport, 10 nm west (KEFT).
AIRCRAFT CAMPING
Preferred aircraft camping areas are depicted on the airport diagram. If camping on or near closed runways remember they will reopen Sunday afternoon. Runway closures time for early arrivals; Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m.
If you are camping with your aircraft along the west woods, please stay in the mowed ares only.
DRIVE-IN CAMPING
There are no camping fees at Brodhead Airport, but donations are always appreciated to help offset the cost of maintenance.
RVs please use the south entrance. Early arrivals should set-up in the south parking lot until the diagonal runways are closed to aircraft operations on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. Signage will be in place to guide you to the south driveway. You may park/camp along the east edge of the field along Airport Road and in the southeast runway turnaround area once it is closed with the yellow X. Additional camping is available for smaller campers (no RVs) on the southwest side by accessing the south driveway and following the road through Hangar Alley. The southwest runway turnaround is also available for camping once closed. Please do not park or stop and leave your vehicle in Hangar Alley as this is a fire lane. Do not drive across runways to access aircraft camping areas along the west side of the field.
All runways will reopen Sunday at noon. Please plan your site accordingly.
For driving directions, plug “N2439 Airport Road” into your GPS or mapping program.
The nearest airport with commercial air carrier service is Dane County Regional Airport/Madison (KMSN) about 50 minutes north.

Scott Schabow
Scott Schabow, EAA Chapter 431 member and a mainstay of the Brodhead Airport community, passed away at age 52 on November 30, 2020. Scott wrote his own obituary here:
https://www.gundersonfh.com/obituaries/Scott-Schabow?obId=19214216
If you have even a passing association with Brodhead Airport, you know Scott. He flew his 1959 Cessna 175 Taildragger, inherited from his grandfather, more than almost any other airplane on the field. Sometimes he would just go out in the evening and practice landings, and locals no doubt recognized the airplane flying in the airport traffic pattern while he perfected his crosswind technique. But more often than not, he would be flying to some unknown and unplanned adventure.
Scott would often say, “Let’s fly around the patch once…” while his unsuspecting passengers would be along for a three-hour flight to several states and a personal altitude record. “Going for ice cream…” didn’t mean a short hop to the nearest Dairy Queen by an airport. With Scott, it meant 200-mile flight to an airport that he heard had ice cream nearby. It didn’t matter if it was 11:00 p.m. and they were closed; the flight was the adventure. The long-range gas tanks on that Cessna were used often.

This ’59 Cessna 175 was converted to a taildragger by Scott’s grandfather Lyle Elyea. At first glance it looks like a C-180, and he flew it with skill.
If you’ve attended the MAAC “Grassroots” or the Pietenpol/Hatz fly-in recently, Scott was the guy who sold you gas so you could fly home. He always loved to chat with pilots from around the country and made quick friends with all of them.

Scott and his wife Shaun O’Keefe.
Scott was a master electrician and had a hand in just about every electrical project at the airport for the past ten years. Everything from simple lighting jobs to the entire south side electrical upgrade that ran new service to 40+ hangars a few years ago. He always did high quality work and often charged a fraction of the cost, if anything at all.

Son Josh O’Keefe with Scott at Brodhead Airport. Josh is flying the C-175 now too.

Scott and flight crew at the Iola Airport Friday lunch. Flying 150 miles for lunch is a normal thing, right?
A Navy man through and through, Scott loved to talk about the intricacies of the fire control system on Aegis-class cruisers, plus anything else relating to his world travels in the service. Of course, anything aviation related was always a prime topic for extended discussion.
Scott has “Flown West” as they say, and his absence will be felt by all of us for a very long time. A celebration of life is being planned at the Kelch Aviation Museum in September, 2021, when we all hopefully can gather again. Watch this space for details. Blue skies and tailwinds, Scott.

It’s Calendar Time Again

- Photos must have been taken at or near Brodhead Airport.
- Photos of aircraft must be shown in flight, if possible.
Winners will receive a free calendar, plus all the fame and glory that comes with being selected. Last year we sold over 150 calendars, so this is a nice fund raiser for the chapter.

Chapter Picnic is Sunday, Sept. 27 – BYOF
The annual Chapter 431 picnic will be held as scheduled on Sunday, September 27, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
A change this year; we’re asking everyone to bring your own food instead of a dish to pass. The chapter will provide drinks only. This is for obvious COVID-19 safety reasons.
Let’s hope for good weather and a fine turnout. See you all on the 27th.
